The International Day of the Girl is an occasion to celebrate the limitless potential of young women worldwide.

This year, the Young Women for Awareness, Agency, Advocacy, and Accountability (YW4A) initiative through the webinar, From Pixels to Power: Navigating Online Spaces Fearlessly and Safely, highlights the critical issue of violence against young women in digital spaces. Young women are powerful agents of change, and this webinar aims to harness their creativity and participation in addressing these challenges. We will focus on the unique online experiences of young women in Egypt, Kenya, Palestine, and South Sudan.

Context
Digital spaces have transformed how we communicate and engage with the world. However, they have also become breeding grounds for various forms of violence against young women. Over the years, more so with the increased use of digital spaces during the Covid-19 pandemic and the popularization of interactive and live social media platforms and Artificial Intelligence (AI), there has been an alarming rise of gender-based violence (GBV) and harassment in online environments.

This webinar seeks to shed light on the issues young women face online, including but not limited to:

  • Cyberbullying: Discussing how young women are targeted and harassed online, and the emotional toll it takes.
  • Intimidation: Exploring how digital platforms can be used to silence young women’s voices.
  • Personalized attacks on women in leadership: Examining the specific challenges faced by young women aspiring to political leadership.
  • Harassment: Sharing personal stories of online harassment and the importance of supporting one another.
  • Body shaming: Discussing the harmful effects of body shaming and promoting body positivity.
  • Online grooming: Raising awareness about online predators and strategies to protect oneself.

Webinar Objectives

The webinar aims to achieve the following:

  • To raise awareness by increasing understanding among young women about the various forms of violence they may encounter online.
  • To equip young women with the knowledge and tools to stay safe and resilient in digital spaces.
  • To encourage young women to support one another and create a network of digital allies
  • To advocate for change by developing a list of actionable solutions to address online violence against young women.

In a world where digital spaces are becoming increasingly important, young women must be equipped to navigate these spaces safely and confidently. This webinar fosters a supportive and constructive atmosphere, empowering young women from diverse backgrounds in Egypt, Palestine, South Sudan, and Kenya to take control of their digital experiences. By sharing stories, understanding challenges, and collaboratively crafting solutions, we aim to catalyze positive change and create safer online environments for all.
