The ordination of the first female pastor in Palestine, Reverend Sally Azar earlier this year is a historic achievement, and a noteworthy milestone towards gender equality by breaking down barriers and challenging traditional gender norms, as well as inclusivity in the church.

Rev. Azar’s ordination is a remarkable accomplishment for the YW4A faith partner in Palestine, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land (ELCJHL) and the Palestinian Christian community. It reflects the church’s commitment to promoting gender equality, through setting a positive example of practising what they preach. This development also sets a precedence for other religious organizations in the pursuit of inclusive governance and gender equality.

Rev. Sally Azar is also actively involved in the implementation of the YW4A programme as a faith gender champion. She engages in safe space dialogues and expert discussions under the YW4A programme, and is a role model for young women in the programme and beyond.

Her ordination is testament to the power of determination, perseverance, and strong faith. In addition, it sends a clear message that women play a vital role in leadership and ministry and that they are equally capable of fulfilling these roles. This achievement marks a significant step towards creating a more just and equitable society, where everyone is given the chance to realize their full potential and contribute to the common good.
